MANAGEMENT STAFF

The day to day administration of the Centre is undertaken by the Head of the Centre and a Deputy Head and assisted by an Administrative Secretary, Research Assistants and core support staff, all appointed by the University.

Dr. Mariama Awumbila (Head)  
Mariama Awumbila holds a Bachelors degree in Geography with Sociology, a Post Graduate Diploma (Population Studies) from the University of Ghana and a Ph.D. (Geography) from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. She is currently Head, Centre for Migration Studies and also Senior Lecturer, Department of Geography and Resource Development both at the University of Ghana. Her research interests includes population, gender, environment and development inter-relationships, migration and development and in participatory research methodologies. She has undertaken extensive research and published in the areas of migration, livelihoods and development, land and natural resource tenure and management, gender and development and poverty reduction strategies. She has also provided extension services for several national and international agencies and community based organisations in Ghana. She is a member of the international Geographical Union (IGU) steering committee on Gender and Geography, the Union of African Population Scientists, and the Ghana Geographical Association. She currently serves on several national Boards including the Ghana Statistical Service Board, the Ghana National Council for Tertiary Education, the University Council of the University for Development Studies among others.
   

 

Dr. Peter Quartey (Deputy Head)

PhD in Development Economics (Manchester, UK), MSc in Quantitative Development Economics (Warwick,UK), MPhil Economics (Ghana), BA Economics (Ghana).  A Senior Research Fellow, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research, University of Ghana.  A Development Economist with specific interest in: Migration and Remittances, Poverty and Inequality, Monetary Economics, Private Sector Development, Development Finance.  He has consulted on a number of projects some of which includes the Ghana National African Peer Review Mechanism on Socio-economic Development, UNDP report on Costing Ghana’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), EU-IOM Migration Profile for Ghana, The Ghana Millennium Challenge Account Baseline Survey, Monitoring and Evaluation of Ghana’s APRM Programme of Action. He is also a Member of the African Economic Research Consortium and Board Member of the National Population Council

   

 

Joseph N. Kpakpo (Senior Administrative Assistant)

He Holds B.A. in Psychology and Management and a Master of Philosophy in Psychology (Industrial and Organizational Psychology). He started working in the University of Ghana in 1985 and rose through the ranks to become a Senior Administrative Assistant. He is currently the Senior Administrative Assistant of the Centre for Migration Studies.

 

   

 

Edward Asubonteng-Manu (Principal Research Assistant)

He holds an MPhil in Demography from Cairo Demographic Centre (CDC), Egypt and a B.A. (Sociology) from the University of Ghana, Legon. He has vast experience as a Senior Research Officer at the Population Impact Project of the University of Ghana. He has attended some local and international seminars and workshops on Migration, Population and Health.

   

 

Jacques Ayartey (Typist)

He started working in 1980 as a Messenger in the University of Ghana. Through the dent of hard work he was promoted to Typist Grade II in 1987. Since then he has served as a typist at the Registry (Admissions Office) of the University of Ghana. He currently serves as the Typist for the Centre for Migration Studies.

 

 

   

 

Edmond Nsiah Laryea (Driver)

He has much experience as a driver. He has worked with Wade Adams Construction Ltd which later changed as Scansca Construction Company Limited from 1991-1994 after which he got an appointment with the University of Ghana. He has been working as driver in the University since 2000. He is currently the CMS’ driver.
